Serenade of the Seas is the third ship built in Royal Caribbean's Radiance class. (See also Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas). She was built by Meyer Werft in Germny, which is known for its quality.
At 90,000 gross tons, Serenade is a medium-size ship but has a much more intimate feel. Moreover,it is a different feel than the larger RCI Oasis, Freedom and Voyager class mega-cruise ships. While she does not have the activity and excitement of a Royal Promenade, she has a subdued refined elegance. Serenade and her sisters can be viewed as forerunners, not only of RCI's Quantum class ships but also of Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice-class ships (See Celebrity Solstice profile). They are elegant ships but with a contemporary vitality. In addition to the elegance of her interior design, Serenade has some impressive nautical attributes. With the ability to reach 25 knots, she is very fast for a cruise ship. Her dual azipods and three bow thrusters give she very good maneuverability when docking. The gas turbine power plant is environmentally friendly, although more expensive than a traditional diesel power plant. (Because of the high cost of the fuel, Serenade has been retro-fitted with a supplemental diesel engine). RCI often uses the Radiance ships to test new itineraries. As a result, Serenade tends to do longer cruises that include both well-known ports and less developed ports. |

The decor on Serenade is a mixture of traditional and contemporary producing a generally relaxed and subdued atmosphere. It is punctuated with an art collection that ranges from antiques to modern including a number of whimsical pieces. (See art collection review).
