ZUIDERDAM
PHOTO TOUR AND COMMENTARY CONTENTS |
OVERVIEWZuiderdam was the first Vista class ship built by Fincantieri for Holland America Line. This design was so successful that the design has been used as the basis for ships in the fleets of Cunard, Costa, and P&O Cruises. Holland America has built three more Vistas (Osterdam, Westerdam and Noordam) as well as two enhanced versions (Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam), which the line calls its Signature class.
Although it has been somewhat toned down over the years the decor of the ship is somewhat brighter than in her sisters. There is still the overall sophistication that is a key element of the Holland America experience but Zuiderdam comes across as more lively than some of her fleetmates. Perhaps because of the personnel, Zuiderdam has traditionally had a reputation for having an active atmosphere. There is a lot on the program and the crew conduct themselves like they are genuinely pleased to be there. Turning to the technical side, Zuiderdam was built with five diesel generators and one gas turbine. The gas turbine reduces emissions and thus enables the ship to more easily meet the strict standards laid down for Alaska cruising. |
Zuiderdam has a sophisticated, contemporary decor with a museum-like art collection.
