Dominating the ship's three-story atrium is a large clock tower loosely based on a 17th-century Flemish design.  It incorporates 14 clocks telling the time in various locations around the world.

OVERVIEW

This Rotterdam is the sixth Holland America Line ship to bear the name of The Netherlands largest port city.  She is the co-flagship of the line along with her close but not quite identical sister, Amsterdam.

Rotterdam follows a varied itinerary, which takes her on cruises  to the Baltic, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Black Sea, the Pacific, the Panama Canal, Egypt, South America and around the world.  Because of the diversity of the ports she visits, her cruises are often longer than those of other cruise ships.

Inside, the ship is quietly elegant.  There is extensive use of wood finishes in the public rooms and restrained lighting.  Although the design style is contemporary, it recalls the elegance of traditional ocean liners.

The ship is geared toward the well-educated.  She abounds in artwork and antiques.   On longer voyages, there is a special lecture program focusing on the history and culture of the places the ship will be visiting.

Using a traditional propeller shaft and rudder arrangement, Rotterdam is nonetheless maneuverable.  Furthermore, she can achieve 25 knots which is faster than most cruise ships.

In 2009, Rotterdam underwent a major refit during which several areas were changed.  Inside, this included the installation of Mix, an area combining three different bars.  Outside, the aft pool was removed and the Retreat put in its place.

The decor of Rotterdam is sophisticated, covering a variety of styles.  It includes a museum quality art collection.
Fresh flower displays are a hall mark of Holland America voyages.
As a ship that has traveled the world, Rotterdam has numerous plaques and awards given to her in the ports she has
visited.  There are also reminders of HAL's maritime heritage
mixed in as part of the decoration.
