SUMMARYViking Sky was the third ship built in a series luxurious, small cruise ships for Viking Ocean Cruises. All of the ships are essentially identical.
There is nothing flashy about the Viking ships (see our photo tour of Viking Star) . Rather, the interior public areas recall the living rooms in an upscale home, decorated with books, comfortable furniture and open architecture. As one might expect, the design has a Nordic flavor. Passengers tend to be of retirement age. There are no children. Nor are there amusement park features such as watershides and laser tag. At the same time, there is no casino. The adults on Viking tend to be well-educated people who are more interested in cultural activities. In addition to the main dining room, there are specialty venues but unlike most cruise ships, there generally is no extra charge. All of the staterooms have balconies. There are no interior or oceanview (window-only) cabins. However, not all of the staterooms are the same. There are size differences. The ship also has a number of suites. In 2019, Viking Sky was involved in an incident off the Norwegian coast. During a severe storm, the ship's engines failed due to a problem with the lubrication system. As a result, the ship began to evacuate passengers. However, the engines were re-started and the evacuation halted. The ship was then taken into port and subsequently repaired in a shipyard. |
