CUNARD LINE

QUEEN ANNE

SUMMARY

Cunard Line's Queen Anne is a medium-size cruise ship offering a sophisticated cruise experience.

Throughout Cunard's 200-year history, the primary focus of the line was on transatlantic crossings. With the arrival of transatlantic passenger jets in the 1950s, the market for transatlantic crossings became very limited. Indeed, first with the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) and more recently with the Queen Mary 2, Cunard has been the only line offering regularly scheduled transatlantic crossings for more than 40 years.

While the Atlantic service remains viable enough to support one ship, one ship is not sufficient to support a line of Cunard's stature. Prior to the 1960s, Cunard had dabbled occasionally in the cruise business so cruising was the obvious direction in which to diversify. Accordingly, Cunard experimented with both mass market and luxury cruising during the second half of the 20th century. These ventures were not very successful and so when Carnival Corporation purchased Cunard at the turn of the century, it determined that Cunard's cruise ships would be designed to offer a cruise experience recalling the ambiance of transatlantic ocean liners. To this end, it built the cruise ships Queen Victoria (2007) and Queen Elizabeth  (2010).

In many respects, Queen Anne carries forward this idea. Most of the public rooms on Queen Anne carry the names of venues on Cunard's other ships. The guiding principle of elegance and quiet, respectful servie still remain. However, as indicated by Queen Anne's large colllection of contemporary art, there has been a decided effort to ensure that the new ship is relevant to sophisticated contemporary cruisers.

Queen Anne has four complimentary main dining rooms. As on many other lines today (e.g. Celebrity, NCL, MSC), access to these dining rooms is based on your stateroom category. Open to all is the buffet restaurant and various quick eats venues.

In addition, Queen Anne has four extra-tariff specialty restaurants, including a restaurant specializing in seafood and steaks, a Japanese-inspired venue, and a Mediterranean restaurant. Pub dishes can be purchased in the Golden Lion pub.

Inasmuch as Queen Anne is designed to appeal to more sophisticated, culture-oriented travelers, the facilities and activities lean towards more cerebral entertainment such as lectures and concerts. While there is a pool and a large spa, there are no water-slides, roller coasters or ropes courses.

Queen Anne is a Pinnacle-class cruise ship, sister to Holland America's Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam. At 113,000 gross tons, she is larger than Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth but considerably smaller than Queen Mary 2.
