SUMMARYNorwegian Prima was the first ship in Norwegian Cruise Line's Prima class. In some respects, Prima was a change in direction for NCL. While in other respects, she is an evolution of what had gone before.
Prior to Prima, NCL ship was building larger and larger ships. Although large, Prima is slightly smaller than the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus class ships. Moreover, it carries nearly a thousand less passengers. In addition, NCL turned from the shipyards in Germany and France that had built its recent ships and turned to Italy's Fincantieri shipyard. While NCL's previous ships had traditional slanted bows, Prima has a relatively straight bow reflecting current thinking on hydrodynamics. The interior décor of the ship is contemporary, with much use of muted earth tones and sophisticated lighting. As a result, Prima has a different look from earlier classes of Norwegian ships. Along the same lines, while several of the venues utilize names familiar from past NCL ships they are often expanded and/or have different decoration. Prima does continue NCL's hallmark Freestyle cruises. It is a relaxed vacation experience. Informal, it offers guests a variety of dining and entertainment options. A leader in specialty dining, NCL regulars will recognize venues such as Le Bistro (French cuisine); Los Lobos (Mexican); Cagney's (steakhouse); and Food Republic (Latin-Asian fusion). There are also Japanese cuisine venues but with different names than on previous ships. Onda by Scarpetta is the ship's Italian restaurant. In addition, a new specialty venue Palomar specializes in Mediterranean seafood. As on previous NCL ships, there are two main dining rooms. Both use the same menu but the menu does not change from day to day. Of course, Prima has a buffet restaurant. However, there are additional complimentary venues including the familiar neighborhood bar/diner, The Local. A new venue is a food hall with indoor and outdoor seating and encompassing 11 restaurants, most of which are complimentary. Prima also has an evolution of the Haven concept seen on previous NCL ships. This is a luxury ship-within-a-ship area. It encompasses the ship's most spacious accommodations an has its own restaurant and bar as well as butler service. At the other end of the spectrum, Prima continues NCL's innovative concept of a special area for guests traveling solo with efficient studio cabins and a dedicated solo lounge. As on the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus class, the amusement park attractions have continued to grow. For example, guests can experience twisting slides that run down the side of the ship from the top decks to the outdoor promenade several decks below. However, there are additional fees for the go-cart racing, mini-golf, darts, and virtual reality gaming. The outdoor promenade is an evolution of the promenades on the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus ships. It is larger and has features such as infinity pools. Prima is reputed to have more outdoor space than its predecessors. |
