Inside Radiance of the Seas
REVIEW AND COMMENTARY
Radiance of the Seas was the first ship in Royal Caribbean's Radiance class. (Her sisters are: Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas. “I call them the
Maseratis of the fleet” says Captain Herman Zini who has commanded both Radiance of the Seas and Brilliance of the Seas. “They are extremely maneuverable, slim and extremely, fast. Great ships and they are really elegant “ The speed comes from two 20.5 mw gas turbine engines that provide power to the ship's azipod propulsion system. The official cruising speed is listed as 25 knots but it is widely acknowledged that Radiance's hydrodynamic hull can cut through the water at considerably faster speeds. As a result, Radiance and her sisters are some of the fastest cruise ships now operating. The elegance of the ship can be seen in her decor. Radiance's public space has very tradition sections and quite contemporary sections. They blend together into a harmonious whole because of the adherence to high quality throughout. Royal Caribbean built the four Radiance class ships contemporaneously with its Voyager class ships. However, while Radiance has a definite Royal Caribbean flavor, it a much different cruising experience than on Royal's giant ships. It is perhaps more traditional and more sophisticated, almost approaching the style of Royal's sister company Celebrity Cruises. In May 2011, Radiance underwent an extensive revitalization during which several additional dining venues were added to the ship. The concepts for these restaurants had been developed and proven on giant fleetmates Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. Transplanting them to Radiance gives passengers on Radiance a large variety of dining choices. |
