REVIEW AND COMMENTARY
Carnival Breeze is a large family friendly, mass-market cruise ship. She was the third ship built in Carnival's Dream class. (See our Introduction to the Dream class). The ship attracts primarily young people especially young families from North America. However, there are cruisers of all ages on a typical passenger list.
I It is unusual for the third ship in a class to be a turning point. However, Carnival Breeze, incorporated a number of significant changes from her predecessors. Some of these have been retrofitted into Carnival's earlier ships but others have not. First, there is the appearance of the ship. Her interior was designed primarily by Partner Ship Design of Hamburg Germany. Only two of the public rooms were designed by Joe Farcus, Carnival's longtime interior architect. As a result, the ship's interior does not have the imaginative but sometimes controversial style of earlier Carnival ships. Instead, Carnival sought to have this ship more clean-lined and open than earlier ships. Carnival wanted the ship to reflect the beauty of the places that it sails to, in particular the Caribbean. As a result, the colors are softer and the interiors less dramatic. The designers captured the feel of a Caribbean resort, albeit with a somewhat European styling. Carnival has carried this interior design concept forward into the ships that followed Breeze. But looks are not all that is different about Carnival Breeze. The ship was the first ship built to incorporate Carnival's Fun Ship 2.0 program. Consequently, it offers a broader array of dining options than were offered elsewhere in the Carnival fleet when Breeze entered service including a sit-down sushi restaurant, a BBQ restaurant, a Mexican venue and a hamburger grill created in conjunction with celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Successful venues like the Red Frog Pub and Cucina del Capitano were carried over from Carnival Magic. The main dining rooms, the buffet and the steakhouse all were re-thought. Carnival Breeze also reflects new thinking with regard to entertainment. In the main theater, traditional scenery has been replaced by LED screens. Its shows featured a cast in which everyone was both a singer and a dancer. There was also a new 4-D theater. Of course, it is always dangerous to change a successfulproduct and Carnival is the most successful cruise line. However, time has shown Carnival Breeze works and, as mentioned earlier, Carnival has built upon the foundation laid in Carnival Breeze in subsequent ships. |
