REVIEW AND COMMENTARY
Azamara Journey is one of eight nearly identical ships built for
Renaissance Cruises. Each ship was rather unimaginatively given the name R followed by a number corresponding to its place in the sequence in which the ships were built. After Renaissance went out of business the fleet was dispersed amongst a number of cruise lines. Now they are evenly split between Azamara and Oceania Cruises. Azamara Journey was R-Six. (See our introduction to the R Class).. Although the R-class ships, as they are known, have, and have had, numerous owners, for the most part, they have retained their original atmosphere and style. They are indisputably elegant and lend themselves to sophisticated, up-market cruising. Since the hardware is still very similar, the question naturally arises, why choose one line over the others? "We have here a philosophy of destination immersion, " explained Captain Jason Ikiadis, Master of Azamara Journey, "We go to 170 ports in over 50 countries. We like to stay later and even overnight so you have a real chance to visit the places that you are going to. In addition to that, onboard we have a casual elegance." "From what I hear, it is the friendliness of the crew, the flexibility and the follow-up that people really appreciate," adds Hotel Director Heike Berdos. Returning guests "say it feels like homecoming." Azamara Journey competes in the luxury cruise segment. A selection of wines is included with lunch and dinner; specialty coffees, teas, and soft drinks are also complimentary. For guests staying in certain suites, there is no cover charge for the specialty restaurants and they have free access to the outdoor section of the spa. Journey's itinerary takes her around the globe. "We also try and go to some places that are off the beaten track where the big ships can't go," noted Captain Ikiadis. "It really doubles your chances of savoring the country that you are visiting." |
